Mantawi Festival

Last week we went to a dance festival in Mandaue…Mantawi Festival! It was rather a dance contest. Every Barangay where there is a High school and/or elementary school has the possibility to participate. In total 7 Barangays/schools participated.

First they danced near a mall: on the parking, on the grass, next to the entrance, … . Each group has its own costume, dance and music band (drums, bongo, trumpets…). Very rhythmic music…I had a hard time standing still! :) Every group presented typical things of Mandaue and all dances had underlying meanings (fe. Clean Barangays, children rights,…).

After a few hours the real street dancing began. They walked from the mall to the sports center, where the final show took place. We joined the dancing groups and apparently it was quite special that there were foreigners present…yes we were interviewed by some journalists of the Cebu Daily News. (haha)

In the sports center every group gave the best of himself….amazing! The dances were very nicely performed and sometimes with quite spectacular acts. In the end all the groups also performed a dance together. We enjoyed the show so much!

At the end different prices were given for example for best costume, best street dance, best music,… and finally the overall best! The final winner of the whole contest and yes…they deserved it! The winning groups so happy…shouting, dancing, crying, laughing…! The show ended with some nice fireworks…fantastic!
